Easter 07/04/2023

For the first time in years, I’m looking up at clouds - forming, dissolving, reforming … metamorphosis magic!

Not that looking up is special, but having the time to do it is. Being unexpectedly and reluctantly retired is a shock and something I’m still struggling to come to terms with, and not having numerous servers needing my attention over the long weekend is weird!

Walks are planned, of course, and now lunchtime isn’t restricted to two hours, we’re free to extend them as we please - maybe turn left when right is the correct way home. On Friday we still take lunch to the beach at El Puertito, but we go via the barranco instead of the road, paths sometimes at nearly 45 degrees - thank goodness lava is naturally anti-slip. We go though an area which is recently quite infamous - building work was halted after it was discovered the company had bribed Adeje council. There are protected species of both plants and animals in this area. Protestors, and almost riots on some occasions, brought the fight to the press and then national government to stop the development.

Both Saturday and Sunday we walk a round-trip to La Caleta - slightly different routes and also one day clockwise, the other anti. This is one of our favourite walks and the views are marvellous. One way we walk nearby to “footballer’s row” and the golf course, the other alongside the coast. It’s no great surprise to see the latest car showroom in taking shape nearby and not far away from the helipad. The house with a crane nearby is currently on sale for €6.8M.

Either way, we take the 131 steps at La Caleta to continue the walk. There’s a festival coming so the staging is being set nearby.

The coastal route is very popular - the beaches in the whole area are clothing-optional.

Our Monday starts with a bus - we go 4 miles to Fañabe, it’s a small area cut off from the rest by barrancos on both sides, where our dentist can be found. It may be bank holiday in the old country, but here it’s a normal day. We walk back home winding around the barranco del agua, which has a gateway for a pilgrim’s pathway, picking up a few essential needs such as soy sauce, horseradish sauce, tomato purée and some bread as we pass the appropriate supermarket - there are six on this route and we know which stocks what.

I spend the afternoon fixing a friend’s PC problem in Yorkshire, move a couple of websites to a different host and test some sexy new code, so it’s not all sky-gazing after all. Later we get our swimming laps done, an hour’s evening walk around the area and then throw a couple of tuna steaks on the BBQ - marvellous!
