Antarctica 02/02/18 Day 21 - at sea

Last days are always sad days, but inevitably they are as predictable as death and taxis. Oh that’s not quite right but you get my drift?

Even our walking was challenged today as the deck staff were doing a deep clean of deck five, fortunately only half of it, so we managed to get the miles in but not using the whole circuit - still better than on deck nine where there are now too many people for comfort.

Captain’s noon address (a shipboard tradition) let us know that by our disembarkation we will have sailed 5312 nm which is 6111 English Miles, not a bad journey?

After all that I did yesterday’s photo upload which, because it takes so long, spilled into lunch, a curious combination of grilled red snapper, fries, bratwurst and pizza (only curious because that’s what I constructed!) all washed down by a nice Kendal-Jackson Chardonnay or two.

Meanwhile during our walking we completed our plans for our summer holiday, being in constant email contact with our wonderful travel lady Lexi who is always a gem, even thought it’s her last day in post, we will miss her!

Our day continued to be a great relaxing finish to our wonderful holiday, as we adjourned to the jacuzzi and the lovely bar boys brought cocktails, Hubby concentrating on his Kindle and me writing my blog and FaceBooking (iPhone X is fine if it goes under, thankfully, it’s rated IP67!)

Next came an unexpected galley tour as we couldn’t get on the previous one. I love the tours, they always include champagne and caviar, who could ask for anything more? Chef Gerard personally escorted us round his galley, we saw things like the soup kettles I’ve not seen before - 48 hours rendering the meat bones, chicken carcasses or fish and shellfish down to make exquisite tasting stocks.

We also saw the various other stations where meats, desserts, breads, pastas etc were created by his talented army of chefs.

After all this we had to start packing, not a happy pastime but essential. OK, the Husband actually did it, but I’m quite good at being wardrobe assistant really, I just make a lot of fuss!

By 18:00 it was Epicurean Extravaganza on deck eight which means all the officers man different food stalls, featuring smoked fillet, Parma ham, cheeses, caviar, goulash, smoked salmon, vodkas and other lovely food items. Bar staff ensure that no-one is dry for long, and it’s a wonderful way to see out our last evening. We catch up with many of our contacts: walkers, talkers, smokers, dancers and assorted other cronies.

Then it’s down to deck four for our last dinner, an excellent TK caviar dish followed by snails then veal osso buco, which was excellent albeit overfacing. Pudding was the TK hazelnut ice-cream, with caramel and syrup - lovely.

We decided that we couldn’t face the show tonight, so went looking for the Colorado Girls to say goodbye, then came home to finish our packing.
