We rise early again and today get breakfast on our balcony, whilst Captain is busy parking us in Civitavechia. We leave the ship about 08:00 but get stymied at the next hurdle - it's Saturday so the Europcar office opens later, we hang around watching the world go by and dozens of taxi drivers touting for business.
Our journey today is in three halves, each belonging to another millennium.
Firstly we head off to Parco dei Mostri, a recently discovered park containing the most curious of sculptures commissioned in the 1500s by a local prince. They are mostly obtuse but also classically correct, depicting mythological characters alongside more modern protagonists.
Next we visit Tarquinia, a town founded in the Iron Age around 1000 BC but rebuilt relatively recently in 1200 AD. It's higgledy-piggieledy streets are exactly how you'd expect them to be. Many ancient churches plus numerous towers make up this walled town along with piazza and more towers.
Finally we visit Cerveteri where the nearby necropolis is the most extraordinary find dating back to the seventh century AD. Here are hundreds of tombs where locals with the necessary cash paid for their friends and family to incarnate their remains. Long undiscovered this is another recent find and archiologeologists are continually finding more in the area.
We return in this to take a much-needed soak in a nearby hot-tub with a Mojiito and excellent company from an Anglo-Swedish couple.
