Tenerife 2022 - August 19-21

After a whole five minute rainstorm in the small hours a few days ago, every outside surface is sandy again. It’s the only rain we’ve seen in August, now the dusting of Sahara needs dealing with, because it’s unlikely it will rain again anytime soon to wash it away.

So before breakfast, whilst it’s still cool, we go full-on “Mrs Mop” cleaning all the windowsills, glass balustrades and pathways around the garden. It’s a good hours workout for Saturday morning.

Meanwhile in other news, we visit a dealer on Friday evening, test and then order a car. The lead time is between three and eight months, so I’m not going to nix anything yet by giving details, except to say it will be red - and that’s not a hint it’s a Ferrari - indeed such a car would be ridiculous on the tiny country roads we love around here - actually we’ve gone standard hatchback, well almost.

Back to Saturday we enjoy shopping (hmm that’s a bit of an exaggeration but I do love the bread slicer!) then lunch in our garden before driving north to where we stopped walking last weekend at Santiago del Teide.

Then we have a lovely walk into Los Gigantes, taking the coastal route one way and the rather more up and down route back to the car, as usual the rugged scenery is wonderful.

A break from routine finds us in the Rosa Centre for appointments at the hairdressers, an amusing half hour later - the girls were laughing throughout, but an Irish lady client in the next chair to me assures us it wasn’t at our expense - we emerge with sharp cuts!

After swimming, we dress up for dinner, long trousers even, then jump in the car and drive the few miles to La Caleta, tonight we’re trying the place everyone raves about - La Veija.

We soon discover there’s a good reason people rate “the old lady” as the name translates, she’s a fine establishment, mostly fish, and we enjoy a fabulous dinner, too much squid (but it was goooood) and fish croquettes followed by turbot and grouper. The latter is one I’ve seen so many times when diving, but tonight is the first time to taste this ugly creature, and it turns out to be wonderful.

Excellent wine, great service and a super live singer (mostly Great American Songbook) make the evening complete. And good company, obvs!

Sunday starts with FaceTime to Sheffield, which goes on for two hours over a long and leisurely breakfast, before we head out to continue our Tenerife Round Walk - two Sundays ago we’d made it to Playa San Miguel de Abona, in particular it’s marina, and that’s where we start from today.

Driving down between two golf courses we park up next to Golf del Sur and walk the coast as much as possible, which turns out to be nearly all the way, towards El Médano, but elect to stop two km before then, as it seems like a natural turning point at Montaña Roja beach. In fact it turns out to be a bit too “au natural” - whilst eating our ploughman’s on the beach we observe some sights we didn’t need to see in the nearby dunes!

We return via the road, a speedier option, and wander back through the complex of hotels around the two golf courses, clearly catering very much for the British trade as all the local shops are advertising only in English - and unlike the melting-pot of tongues where we live, it’s all we hear spoken too.

Late afternoon is spent messing with the irrigation system - we’ve put in a couple of bougainvillea and they need to be properly watered, plus a few other tweaks - it’s a computer after all!

Then it’s time for evening rituals and cooking - Delia’s fast roast pork tonight as I bought an ibérico pork fillet for a change. These pigs feed on acorns and other forest goodies and have a wonderful red-meat colour which is also more fatty than regular pork. The results are outstanding! I can’t wait to sous vide one of these another time.
