Western Med 2022 - Day 15 - July 22

First time in Tangier for over forty years, I can only remember the Kazbar for being the most extraordinarily chaotic place ever. Today, however is Friday and things are less busy than usual, a lot of shops are closed.

We start by walking off the pier, less than a mile so no contest, and follow the city wall at sea level until we reach steps. Already the internet has failed us both (we later learn that no-one seems to have had mobile data all day) so we’re back to using pen and ink - which doesn’t phase us at all - but the ability to read a map is essential.

Wandering around the right alleys and streets is difficult, added to by the pressure to not look like a tourist. If one does, the locals pounce … be your guide, best view in town, buy a carpet, shoes, water, stuffed camel, bracelet … the list is endless. If we respond in English it invokes an entire monologue in David Jason / Dell Boy / luverly jubbley lingo complete with an insatiable desire to keep trying to sell something. If we respond in their second language of French they are kind and respectful and go on their way. Lesson learned.

So keeping on moving and surreptitiously checking the map sees us walk though the labyrinthine maze of the old city. It’s fascinating and in parts very pretty. One has to watch out for cats, and their poo, they are everywhere!

After we’ve wiggled around the maze for some time we head off around the bay for a proper walk. Here in the modern city one could be anywhere, with hotels, restaurants, offices and a few recognisable brands on one side and the beach on the other. We turn around at the railway station and return to Sojourn.

We get a half ham and mush and half margarita made for us - yummee!

With no usable internet, the afternoon is very lazy. Possibly caused by the strong wind and/or refilling, the pool is freezing - well, it’s down to 26 - so after a two-minute swim we switch to a jacuzzi for the first time this cruise, and chat with various new-to-us people. Travel, the weather, next cruise … all the universal topics of conversation.

Dinner is excellent - we have scallops, tomato soup / butternut squash broth, lasagna / veal loin, cheese, crumble / coconut soufflé.
