Caribbean 2022 - Day 10 - Friday 21 Jan

It’s our fifth sea day if one includes the self-inflicted Barbados situation. On an 11 day cruise in normal times this could be considered a couple too many, but after a 24 month abstinence we will take an 11 sea-day cruise! In fact we had some friends who did just that, a cruise to nowhere on Queen Elizabeth, last autumn, they loved every minute!

The work-internet saga continues, my temporary solution bounces via the office in Leeds, which I see at 03.00 today has had a failure. These things are meant to try!!

Today we have to take a test, so once again we have anxiety issues for a few hours. Irrational as it is, one can’t help mulling over the “what ifs“ until the result is known. It could be a short walk in Ft Lauderdale on Sunday!

After another gut-busting breakfast, today my skillet (which is just American for frying pan) is basically a deconstructed Spanish omelette or frittata. Very nice!! Hubby had a more sensible Eggs Benedict, but our waiter insisted on slipping in a “banger” each, now he knows we approve.

Happily the office internet is resolved so I spend an hour troubleshooting something, before playing “find the husband” in time to meet our testing appointment.

Eureka!! After a brutal testing (“let’s see if we can find a brain up each of those nostrils”) we are sent back to our cabin for thirty minutes. If there’s no call, great news, so we can continue with our day, obviously starting with getting five miles under our belt before lunch, finishing Miss Saigon (more tears) then swapping Schönberg’s version for Puccini’s version of how deadly a distant romance can be!

I’ve been asked to post a few of our room so here goes, from plenty of wardrobes, though “his and his” sinks, and finally our veranda.

We repair to New York Deli to lunch on Cæsar salad, but decide to also share a pizza. We sneak in a plate of homemade blueberry pie whilst we chat for a while with Renè, one of our riders from Idaho, before heading up to a quiet spot on deck ten to call friends in Sheffield, whom we take on an art tour of our ship.

An hour later and we’re doing our second five miles, stopping occasionally to chat but otherwise making excellent time to Company - the 2018 gender reversed version. Pool time follows, complete with Debby my new Facebook comrade and a new cocktail - Bahama Mama - recommend by our Pinnacle server Tasha. It’s been hot day and we deserve something to chill!

Sunset is just a good as yesterday, even a bit Art Deco with the fan effect!

Later we head to the theatre for the fourth Company dance production, another excellent high-energy performance.

It’s “gala” night, a new dumbed-down way of naming “Formal Night” that doesn’t upset the delicate sensibilities of those that don’t or won’t own a DJ - we dress properly, for each other, so take no notice of our fellow guests, some of whom forgot to change out of their pool shorts before wandering aimlessly into the theatre and or a dining room. Some folk still do it properly, we’re not on our own.

We are on our own dinner-wise though, as once again chef Felix has prepared us a super-special dinner, tonight after crab cakes and steak tartare we’re having lobster Thermidor, probably the best ever, ever, example we have experienced. Truly magnificent, we are honoured to have this treat created especially for us. We finish with a teeny weeny crème brûlée, and pour heaps of praise on Felix when he comes to see us.
