It wouldn’t have happened if I’d just brought my MacBook. As it’s eight years old there’s an SD reader on it, whereas newer ones don’t have them any longer. Neither do Surfaces, which is what came instead. In Bournemouth I ordered an adaptor, but managed to misplace it at Hambleton hence adaptor number two arrived today. All this is by way of explaining why there may be a collection of extras at the end of today’s missive

Last time we stayed at Leeming House, some dozen years ago, we drove up to Aria Force, a nearby waterfall. This time we’re walking there, via a convoluted route designed to minimise exposure to the A road. Even in the maybe 1/4 mile stretch we had to use, one driver hurled abuse at us (because obviously we were in the wrong) from the protection of his mini. It’s just too stressful, let alone dangerous to go further than one can.
Crossing countryside as much as possible, with a bit of much calmer B road, we take the long way round through Swinburn’s Park and onto Galbarrow Fell in order to stop at Airy Crags, at 481m a local trig-point with incredible views all around. As lovely as it is we’re bitten badly by horse flies, these heat-seeking Exocet-like creatures love calves, back of knee and crook of elbow the best - where it’s warmest, yet until they’ve sunk thief mandibles in one doesn’t feel anything, and then it’s too late!
Then we descend the fell and follow the Aria Beck in the direction of Ullswater where it presents waterfalls, gullies, pools and very nice cascades, first at High Falls and later at Aria Falls.
There are far too many people, so we quickly exit and start back on our continued circumnavigation of Galbarrow Park. As we walk along the ledge we have amazing views of Ullswater below, as well as the wonderful colours all around us. A great walk but in 27 degrees, we’re glad it ended.
We get back and head straight to the terrace for an overpriced larger shandy, and to order lunch, Cæsar for Hubby and fishfinger sandwich for me.
Walking down to the lake after lunch we wonder if it’s a good idea to jump in - probably yes, but the stones are seriously slippy. Hubby goes up to his knees, I stop much lower down at the ankle. If I’d brought dive boots all would have been perfect, except it is still cold!
Later on we FaceTime friends for an hour before a quick shower and dress for dinner, which was pleasant enough yet uninspiring. We will remember Leeming House as “dog hotel” since we are in the minority without at least one, and for its magnificent views from our room, terrace and gardens - but sadly not for excellent food or service.
