Staycation 2021/03 day 16

Tomorrow we return to work, it’s our last day of freedom until our Summer holiday in July, when we’re scheduled to do three weeks cruising the Mediterranean, but we’re expecting to change that.

A lazy Sunday morning with papers is punctuated with a couple of work issues and making lunch, but by midday we’re parking up in Emley village to start our walk.

Heading off across water-logged fields we realise the recent rains have been quite substantial and just maybe a cross-country route is more attractive on paper (well, the OS app) than it is in reality. Within a mile we’re forced to cross a stream where the stepping-stones are all submerged by the engorged flow, but we do get cleaned boots from the experience, for a while anyway.

Passing HM Prison New Hall before carrying on across more mud than seems reasonable. After yet more waterlogged fields, we eventually decide to re-route via roads, meaning for the first time in a while we walk past the National Coal Mining Museum. We are reminded of our excellent visit there a few years ago, strongly recommend when the circumstances allow.

Lunch is late and half-way up a tree, during which the sleet finally turns to snow and we’re absolutely freezing, but we enjoy another variation on Russian Salad. More shortcuts get us heading back on the quickest route to Emley and a thankfully heated seat.

Back home it takes a while to clean the boots and then it’s afternoon tea and we watch Deep Impact, with Morgan Freeman a more convincing president than some of the deals ones we e seem in the last few decades.

Dinner is back to Sunday standard roast, always a perfect result.
