Staycation 2021/03 day 14

When I told Hubby we were doing the full monty he was a little bit concerned we might get arrested, but fortunately I am only planning to show him where some of The Full Monty was filmed!

Dropping the car off at Mercedes Sheffield, we walk up the road for a while, passing the Wentworth, a tiny pub I visited occasionally when it belonged to a friend of a friend, dwarfed by the twin presses at Sheffield Forgemasters.

We drop down on to the riverside and walk along the Don until the pathway is closed. Close to the old Victoria Hotel, scene of many seventies dinners with the parents, we switch from river-path to the very water-logged canal-path and walk up to the Sheffield Basin where the Hilton Hotel (that was) is.

We then head up onto Park Square roundabout for the first ever time, excited like kids (well I am anyway) to see the trams pass by.

We struggle to get back on the tow-path but eventually work it out, and then head out of town, passing the famous filming location as we do. The path is really boggy and slippery so the going is hard, but for several miles we enjoy the canal experience.

Just at the right time, we find a perfect spot for lunch in the middle of the eight-lock flight, and enjoy our fabulous pulled pork sandwiches, whilst we watch the staff of the Canal and River Trust work.

After lunch we walk alongside Supertram, carry on past the Arena, IKEA and eventually pass under the Tinsley Viaduct carrying the M1. We don’t get much further, and fail to reach Magna as planned because the path is closed for repair, but it’s fortuitous as the garage calls to say the car is ready. It’s only 15 minutes back to Mercedes where we part with a small fortune to get the car back.

After an unexpectedly wonderful car service, we get home and do a bit of work then settle down to finally watch Contagion, the film that is so apocryphal it’s quite astonishing.

G&T time comes around very quickly, and I wrap turbot tails in Parma ham, whilst boiling finely chopped shallot in white wine before whisking in lumps of butter to make beurre blanc.
