UK 2020 Covid Tour - day 21 - 23

The weird solution to our usual vacations continues from this weekend. After a two week season at Leeds Playhouse where we enjoy five performances we are ready to enjoy a few days away.

Our destinations of choice are firstly our parental duty, and then after Sunday lunch we plan to move on westerly along the south coast.

The weather is horrendous for most of the weekend, but a few hours on Saturday afternoon bring blue skies and we enjoy a small walk along the coast and stop briefly to watch the sun over the Isle of Wight.

Saturday brings news of Lockdown2 which for a while makes us wonder if we will indeed get away, but as the afternoon wears on we work out that we can indeed go onwards for a few days.

The news brings us both a load of work related issues, and after dinner hubby hits the emails whilst I spend a few hours getting our Academy system updated with a new timetable so the students can continue their classes from home.

Sunday turns out to be so mild we venture off into town without coats. Our journey is only a short one to the Co-op but frustrating once again because of the Guardian’s new voucher system. Three weeks ago we got a new scannable card to replace our previous paper voucher and we found then that none of the newsagents in Selsey had even seen one before, let alone has any idea what to do with them.

Our village paper shop has accepted it with only minor teething troubles, but here in the desolate south even the Co-op and Asda haven’t got a clue, or indeed the two independents we tried. Calling the Guardian is always a lovely experience, and “Adam” was desperate to help, but incapable to do so, however I wait with baited breath for his manager to call me back.

Meanwhile beef rib-eye and Yorkshire pud is coming along nicely! After lunch we hit the road early as we have a lengthy drive ahead. Although only 168 miles to Torquay it’s going to take about four hours and indeed it does through heavy rain, thick fog and idiot follow drivers, however we arrive unscathed.

Quickly checking in we decide to grab a quick walking tour, and at 17 degrees and accounting to AccuWeather no chance of rain for an hour we head off in just t-shirts. Of course, this is England so that plan soon finds us drowned but at least not shivering. We wander back up the mountainside to our cliff-top hotel, which it really isn’t but certainly feels like it.

Soon it’s time to dress for dinner. And as it’s our anniversary we enjoy a lovely bottle of champagne beforehand.
