Originally today was going to be lazy. Then we saw the weather was deteriorating so it got turned into a big walking day. This morning the weather starts to look better so we cut the walk down to 15 miles and set off. Firstly we detour in the hotel grounds to see how the kitchen garden is looking. This huge space is clearly marked out for different crops, herbs, fruits in an ever-changing Plan to suit the seasons.
As previously noted, unless one is doing the peninsula walk, the only way out is back along the causeway towards the main road, which is where we head, crossing the main road and continuing in the outskirts of Oakham.
Before long we’re in Burley on the Hill, a small village with a huge former Palladian mansion, now an up-market housing estate. Incidentally, if you’re into trading, this was the infamous place Polly Peck’s Asil Nadir bought just as his company was imploding amid financial irregularities. The main house was divided into six incredible sections which would each attract £2M price tags without any trouble, and a further 20 or so other properties in the outer buildings, all looking rather impressive. Only the church has public access - we add in a divert so we can have a nosey as we walk past this incredible place.
Moving back to mundane life, we head down the hill towards Langham, Then head back in the direction of Oakham before rejoining the peninsula towards home. It’s just 15 miles which leaves us plenty of time to spend pool-side with the Guardian, our various computers and a pitcher of Sangria
Eventually it’s time to shower and dress for dinner, then descend to the terrace for champagne and amuse.
Then we head inside to “our” bay-window table once again for dinner, where we have a combination of repeated dishes and new ones, in each case the quality is sublime.
