We could drive quickly to Córdoba using fast roads wherever possible, but we are on a touring vacation, not a destination vacation, so we take slower departmental roads as much as possible. It’s still possible to do 95 so it’s a lovely way to enjoy the scenery whilst making moderate progress.
Today was such easy driving it was just devine, as we progress across breathtaking countryside for many miles. The topology changes for a while, and we have to do a small distance on an A road (motorway) but as soon as possible we are back on quiet roads we share with no one. At one point we find a castle perched high on a hill, we’ve yet to decide whether we go back for a look tomorrow.
Arriving in Córdoba we find our rusty hotel at the end of a central gardens. On first glance it’s a strange design, but in fact it’s ultra modern, quite luxurious and the rust is “designer rust” - indeed the effect looking outward is very attractive. We have to change room as our allocated one reeks of smoke, but soon were unpacked and ready for our first explore. Not until after lunch though, so we pop up to the pool bar on floor seven for an expensive salad and beer, there’s always a price to pay!
Tomorrow will be exploring the Old Town and the Jewish Quarter, so today we concentrate on visiting the further out places, the river and bridge and of course scoping out eating opportunities. In three hours we’ve walked most of the route of the HOHO bus and done a good eight mile wander and two-thirds of the extended bits so we can concentrate on the ancient inner bits on Monday.
The pool beckons and we get a relaxing dip before a lovely rosé arrives to tide us over until dinner.
