Anguilla isn't on our radar at all. Only a conversation with a cronie as we tendered to the shore enlightened - apparently it’s THE place for US celebs and sportsmen to have their multimillion second, third, or whatever homes. She rattles off a list of potential sightings, most of whom mean nothing, but point taken.
Our walk starts right at Elvis’s cafe bar, and from there we head inland, around the headland and dropped down to a beautiful beach we share with only one other family, and where, as it was mile four by this time, we enjoy our elevenses even though it’s not yet 10:30.
It’s a steep drop down to the beach, so inevitably we’re climbing up again, on a lovely cliff-side footpath which could be a butterfly sanctuary there are so many, probably quite happy at rest until we come along disturbing their slumbers.
Before long we’re dropping down to the sea again, this time at Coral Bay which is more developed - a small resort hotel and a beach bar - and we talk to some fellow guests who’re taking a ship’s tour to this beach, it’s very pleasant.
Afterwards we wander into the main town of the island, marvelling at how friendly people are, it’s almost impossible to pass someone without a wave, a hello, and even the offer of a lift (not sure they see many walkers, it is over 30 degrees and as humid as hell after all.) We don’t tire of saying hello, which crescendos as we pass a school, the uber-happy children all dressed in bright yellow shirts. [Point of interest, my iPad tried to caplitalise uber - agghhhh!]
There’s been some appalling devastation in the last year, and much is still evident ... many churches, houses, shops are sill in extreme distress, but despite this the people are simply amazing, so friendly and relaxed.
Our journey home passes the airport, and it was interesting to see the parking area dedicated to private jets, presumably awaiting their celebrity owners’ return after the Holiday break? A further indication was the Sotheby’s Real Estate office - didn’t bother looking as we can’t afford.
On our return we arrive past Elvis’s and there a waiting tender, we’re whisked back in time to get a late lunch at the Patio Grill and then descend to five to while away the afternoon in the aft pool, jacuzzis and sunshine with a glass or two.
It’s Captain’s Welcome this evening, we are introduced to all the key people such as Engineer, Doctor, Hotel Director, Cruise Director, and of course the most important person onboard, Head Chef. After this we head to the MDR for the first time this cruise and enjoy dinner, sat close to the ship’s head of HR and his lovey wife, both from Glasgow.
