Crete is the long thin island in the Southern archipelago of Greece. We can a few years ago but Bert gets in Rethmynon sime ways east of the capital Heraklion this time we’re a similar distance West, in the town of Agias Nicolias.
However our destinations of choice are all near Heraklion so we’re driving back there, primarily to visit the Minoan Palace of Knossus and other imports sites in the area.
We start off with a lovely walk from the ship around the harbour to get the car. Of course it’s the last of many in a long string of car-hire firms, but at least the parking zone has relaxed now and the car is right outside, goodness knows where the other companies keep their cars, not in the street anyway.
We’re off on the E75 some 70 km first to a traditional Cretan village, actually an hotel complex which has fashioned all its rooms in the old style, it’s a cute diversion for 15 minutes. Onwards to Tilissol where a trio of palatial houses have been found and excavated. Dating back to between 2000BC and 1500BC they are an amazing incite into a period we know very little about. Two urs 3600 years old are almost intact. With just one other intrepid couple, it’s a wonderful, peaceful exploration.
Onwards to Knossus, a world famous site, and heaving with thousands of visitors, so no peace here!
