Antarctica 01/02/18 Day 20 - Puerto Montt, Chile

It’s our third time here so we needed a new plan, having previously done two variations on the volcano / lake theme which for most is a good choice. Memorably, we also zip-wired in this area 13 years ago, but that’s not even offered these days, more’s the pity!

Today’s plan is to walk out of town heading south and turn around at some stage. Once we’d passed the just opening craft market area, and then through a small up-market residential area, we were soon walking past small, and not so small ports where fishing, a naval base, marina and many industries all co-habited the long strip of water between the mainland and a long island opposite.

The going was quite tough where the pavement was either destroyed, muddy, flooded or just not provided, but we managed a good five miles before turning round. All shapes of houses, offices, yards, shops, hotels, a university and a recently build football stadium made for a very interesting walk.

After the five slow miles we’d consumed two hours, and with a fairly tight schedule today decided to come back, it’s interesting how the return reveals all sorts of things not noticed on the way out.

Sadly the craft market was in full swing on our return and we had to wade through acres of people to along the road past it!

At the port there was a tender waiting, so we hopped on and swiftly returned to our anchored home awaiting us in the bay, in perfect time to pop upstairs to deck eight and order a rare TK Napa Burger. As you will know, Thomas Keller is a blessing and a curse on Seabourn these days, but his burger is very good, it comes piled inedibly high so the first job is to disassemble it, then rebuild it properly. I also get Hubby’s gherkins so that’s a bonus!

We set sail for our disembarkation port, San Antonio, at 15:00, it’s around 595 nm and it will take around 37 hours to get there for early Saturday morning. Watching from the jacuzzi it was necessary to jump out from time to time to get photos of the glorious volcanos rising up behind the town, and islands we walked past earlier.

There was an early call to a cocktail party in the lounge, so we were all DJ’d by 18:00 and by the time we got to the lounge 4 minutes later it was bursting so we sat almost at the back, to hear Captain Larsan talk about the record-breaking voyage, watch the video that has been filmed whilst we were onboard and then finally to see the almost entire compliment of staff and many crew come and parade for us.

Dinner was excellent: foie gras, shrimp bisque, chateaubriand, soufflé - all perfect followed by the final production show, “Live from the Starlight lounge” which we’ve seen before but it’s a jolly good show featuring all the singers and dancers. After a quick gossip with the Colorado Girls we were exhausted and ready for bed.
