Our final day on the Main, we slowly inched our way towards Bamberg, passing a handful of locks whilst we had breakfast and enjoyed a lazy morning on our balcony, reading, planning and making coffee.
Later on we moved to the bow of the boat where there’s a small collection of tables, and watched as we traversed the last 5km towards the docks in Bamberg, even through the intermittent rain. We arrived early, and by 12:50 had been able to get off and walk into town, well ahead of the published schedule. We decided to forego lunch and head off right away which may have been a mistake as the heavens opened again, but had our waterproofs so it was fine really.
Firstly we headed up to the Dom (the Cathederal) but decided we’d eat first, found a promising looking Italian and found a crazy Frenchman who rotated between English, French, German and Italian in nearly every sentence, it was exhausting keeping up with him. But his food was great, our pizzas we amongst the best we’ve ever tasted. Of course we had the obligatory discussions about Macron, Scottish independence and Brexit too!
Back out on the sodden streets, we walked around as much of this incredible UNESCO World Heritage site as we could, enjoying the amazing buildings, the cobbled streets and the magnificent churches - we’d done a lot yesterday so restricted ourselves to three, the fourth was closed for maintenance anyway.
The main cathedral dated back C12 but was not consecrated until 1237, however it contained some interesting items, a statue of a horse and rider from C12 - the Bamber Rider, a tomb of a local noble couple from C11 and local-guy-made-good who became Pope Clement II who died in 1047. Moving on we were again caught in an horrendous downpour before trudging up to St Michael’s Abbey - this was the one that was completely closed, a great shame but such is iife. It was almost in the direction of the boat so we continued onwards, naroowly beating the next (and most heavy) bout of rain by 10 minutes, which we were able to enjoy from the relaxing comfort of the pool - cocktail in hand,
Tonight's dinner was rather mixed - the started and soup we diesspointing, but the main of rump steak was perfectly cooked, and the pudding, a chocolate and chilli mousse, were delicious. Add to that our wine waiter Dino was having a really bad day, he mixed wines up, knocked things over and forgot what we’d ordered, but his smile was enough to forgive him!
We sat at the bow as the sun set, and headed along the first part of the Main-Danube canal, once again the poor internet made it impossible to post photos and none of our 4G connections were working either.
