That was the day that was ...
Today was always going to be interesting. We berthed at 11:00 a good 90 minute ahead of shedule, in Miltenberg which was a beautiful ancient town mostly dated from the 1500s. Wooden buildings looking fantastic with old fountains, squares and of course the obligatory castle on the hill above - this was only the first instalment of today's travels. The boat then moved on to Würtheim, only about 30+ km further along the Main river, another incredible ancient city from the later middle ages.
The boat offered a really odd choice - stay onboard and get a short time in each, or do the tour and get bussed from one to the other. Because we could, we decided to walk between them, on paper (well, on Google) 22km betweeen the two, but of course we didn't make it easy, we walked around Miltenburg first, up to the castle, and then along the extremely long high-street looking at the wonderful old buildings, before we headed out of town in approximately the right direction.
We had decided to pick up lunch en route, which nearly turned out to be a bad decision, but as we approached the only largish town on the route, we found a lovely bakery come cafe, but sadly it was closed for lunch! Fortunately further along the tiny high street we found a butcher that was happy to make us a sandwich, it was quite funny that he just did a thick slice of pork between cumin bread - it was delicious ... add in a tin of beer each all for €4 and it's a great lunch.
We headed up through the insect ridden jungle path (well, pine forest path) and through vineyards, wheat fields, two extremely cute villages, (we stopped for an Apfelstrudel in the latter one,) a thunderstorm of monsoon proportions (got a little bit wet there!) and finally ended up descending into Würtheim from high up, admiring the ruined castle on the opposite hill as we did so. This town is the intersection of the Main and the Tauber and the interesting bits are on the peninsula between the two rivers.
In the end we'd walked 29 km, or 18.2 if you prefer imperialistic measures. After we'd done the town we headed back to the boat for a lovely swim and a cocktail before changing for dinner.
Tonight we actually attended the cruise director's talk, about tomorrow, which is a first, and then made a bee-line down to dinner to snare a lovely table-for-two in the centre of the dining room. Close by were a couple of Aussie sisters with whom we chattered throughout dinner, and they were quite lovely, we had a great time, apart from the food that is - which was singularly dull and uninteresting. Tonight's culinary infarction was - well there were numerous - but one was an hideous. cheese soup.
Finally we headed up to the swimming pool for another movie, this time 'Sully' - about the dreadful way the authorities treated the captain of the ill-fated plane that ditched into the Hudson - which we really enjoyed, indeed like many emotional films it made me cry. I'm just a softy really!
