Monday. First a one-tank dive to Saddle Reef, this is not so far from Meeru, so it's all very casual and laid back as we drop onto the saddle, just 15 mins from the Meeru harbour. Our DM is an old Maldivian who's been around as long as we've been coming, he is so calm. There's only three of us, and Chinese, a German and me, clearly the ingredients of a bad joke! Apocryphal as this shouldn't be, we head off down the edge of the reef and have a great time with the current pushing us along at just about the right rate to see stuff. We find crevasses and corners a plenty full of glorious fish and corals, and see a jet-black stingray vanish into a cave as we watch.
Eventually the other two are close to their limit and they go up, supposedly to their safety stop, but we watch as they hurtle straight up and emerge to get picked up by the dive boat - bad practice but these things happen. We stay down for ages more enjoying the reef, before eventually I need to do my end-of-dive routines and ascend.
The afternoon is spent at lunch, walking, and Sundowning before we head off for dinner.
Tuesday, I'm on a two tank dive and heading off North to Miyaru Faru and Far Reef. These are both corner reefs where the atoll wall breaks to allow the currents in and out, forming a good place of rich water where of course the corals and fish are found. Basically the faster the current the more interesting the dive, although this can go too far! Today was medium plus plus so fine for the experienced divers. We enjoyed two very good long dives.
After lunch it's a lazy afternoon for a few Nourse before doing a coupe of circuits of the island pre Sundowner. Sadly the recent nights sound-sets have not been good, fortunately the wine never disappoints!
We then head off to Asian Wok, not for the usual menu but to visit the Teppanyaki table or for a change, always a good evenings entertainment. We're sharing with a lovely German couple and a delightfully pleasant Korean newlyweds here for a four night honeymoon.
Wednesday and it's a different two-tank, this time to reefs that both calm, although the wind and waves above would not suggest this. We enjoy two calm, relaxing dives each to maximum length allowed, and for the other three divers it's a welcome end to their holiday.
In the evening we head off for a pre-booked Beach Dinner - this is the highlight of the culinary offering on Meeru and we enjoy a quality four course dinner of excellent quality, served feet away from the lapping water's edge.
