Day 14 - Cuitadella Menorca

I thought the anchor was never going to hit the sea bed, it seemed to play out for so long. Of course, I know that they use three times as much chain as the depth of the sea, apparently this is a standard practice, but as it took so long to descend I envisaged the last link flying over the side, never to be seen again! How naive am I? Eventually we are ready to tender ashore, the first of this part of the cruise, and the norm now for every port until we get back to Monte Carlo at the end of our vacation.

The journey into Cuitadella takes a little longer than normal, as the harbour inlet is quite long and the ship’s downtown station is a good way in. It was lovely to see The World again, despite all our travels, it’s been 14 years since we last saw her in the Baltic, off Stockholm.

We start our exploration of the old town by visiting the Town Hall / Police HQ / Primary School, a Moorish building of chequered history which looks amazing, on he main square. next we aim for the Cathedral but it’s closed so head on to do all the other important sights, such as the other squares, market place and the convent, which was surprisingly interesting, diverse and showing signs of getting fixed after the terrible events of 1935 when it was totally ransacked.

Then we were able to do the Cathedral before elevenses on the steps, and moving out to our walk of the day. We headed out along the above mentioned harbour and continued around the headland heading South, until we found another perfect little bay for another stop, and change of direction. We headed back to the harbour for a wonderful, extremely tasty Paella for lunch!

By now it was time to head back and spend an hour or two on deck and in the jacuzzi, before changing for dinner, a wonderful pre-dinner performance by the assistance cruise director Ashley, and then a lovely relaxed dinner on the rear of the ship with the cruise director Sophie. We finished with a show by magician Mark Hallam, who’s slight of hand totally defies comprehesion!
