After a suitable period of respectful silence it’s time to start writing and posting again. We get home on Saturday, have an almost normal Sunday and Monday and then turn around and head south, this time heading for London Town.

We’re so pleased with our poppies, we have numerous fabulous displays around the garden.
The drive is again spectacular as the weather is very much as one might hope for in early summer, indeed in the late twenties by the time we peel off the M1 and schlep around the North Circular towards Islington.

Our car-picnic has diminished somewhat as we snaffled half of it with G&Ts the previous evening, but as always we enjoy the heady combination of open-top driving and picnic on the approaches of the metropolis.
Hubby heads off to the Wells whilst I settle into our room to get on with work for the afternoon, a combination of project work, sorting out classes, dealing with emails and teaching my apprentice - we’re doing some fabulously clever stuff which is way beyond his course - great fun for me, not quite sure what he thinks!
We take an early break to walk around the block - just five miles - before hitting the bar for a surprisingly good Chardonnay and some nibbles. Then it’s a quick change and back to the theatre to receive our guests. It’s all a bit curious as we are not allowed to have our customary functions in the building, so we loiter outside the door, accosting our VIPs as they arrive, but not kissing or cuddling, it’s all about elbow bumps and suitable distances these days. No reception before, during or after so we’re making the most of the pavement shuffle.
The performance is wonderful and we enjoy every minute, but it’s all over very quickly, and after we say our goodbyes on the pavement again, we head off towards China Town. Amusingly, on the way we separately bump into two old friends, the latter now a member of the House of Lords, and stop for a lengthy catch up on each occasion.
Arriving in China Town we’re amazed to find that the majority of restaurants have closed at 22:00 so we get turned away from several of our regular haunts, even the lanterns are turned off. We find one that is still open, a bit basic but we can’t grumble, and still enjoy a lovely dinner, although the wine was pretty rough but at least it was priced accordingly!
