Today should have been a 26 km (16 miles) walk from Kelheim to Regensburg. That was the plan! We’ve very quickly learned that life on the river can be surprisingly unpredictable - the delays caused by traffic around the locks likely to be the greatest issue.
So when the CD announced that the boat was running late around 08:00, and that the brewery tour was being disgorged early we almost decided not to do our planned walk (from the point of the tour at Kelheim to the later town of Regensberg.) Instead the brewers were let go at Riedenburg - some 10 km earlier - but after careful consideration we still decided to do our walk from there.
It was necessary to maintain a good rate from the outset, and because we did we were able to have a great walk and still enjoy time at the end to explore the town of Regensberg. Our walk took us mainly alongside the Main-Danube canal, unit it reached Kelheim, and then onwards to Regenberg, where we were to rejoin the boat.
We were mostly following a network of cycling paths, some of which run for extensive lengths of the river, twice we made strategic decisions to cut across the cycle-route and head over a headland to reduce the length of the route, which meant choosing the path necessary to get lunch - fortunately the ‘old town’ provided us with a lovely supermarket from which to buy stuff - even though I craved quiche, this was not to be found!
On our way out of Kelheim we found the point at which the Danube River and the Main-Danube canal merged - it was quite underwhelming - but we decide to use this place for lunch - even though it was early, we’d earned it! So we sat down to prawn cocktail sandwiches and herb Philadelphia with more fresh;y baked bread, it was just perfect!
Later on we enjoyed the biggest bag of cheeseballs known to mankind - we’d earned that too!! We also had to take a lovely old ferry across the river, which was really interesting - it was current driven - the man padded for 2 or 3 strokes and then the current just pulled the raft against the wire suspended high above - brilliant idea!
After 7.5 hours of walking (not including lunch and other breaks) we had completed 27.5 miles or 44 km. Not content with this we then did a comprehensive tour of all the important sights in the town, before finally using MarineTraffic to find where out boat was hiding and head back to it! Final total over thirty miles.
A quick swim - it had to be the pool was freezing - and change for dinner, we endured the last 20 minutes of the Bavaria, am Oom Pah band, it was probably enough. Then up on the fore deck to write postcards and do my blog and photos for FB. Quite a day!
