Caribbean 2022 - Day 3 - Friday 14 Jan

Sea day #2. Nieuw Statendam has sailed from Florida towards the furthest point of this leg, soon we start heading back, stopping nearly every day on the return.

In going over 1000 Nautical Miles we’ve ventured well into the Atlantic, and earlier today crossed over the Puerto Rico Trench, a scar in the ocean bed that delineates the Atlantic Ocean from the Caribbean sea. It’s 800 miles long, and is the deepest area of the Atlantic - deeper than Everest is high, it drops to 5.2 miles in one section.

After breakfast we hit the Prom deck three again, and soon clock up our first five miles to Carousel London cast recording, probably looking a bit odd with one earbud each and me singing loudly but the other guests, at least those Promenaders who venture out walking, no-doubt think that already after only two days!

Up top to deck nine aft for a couple of hours of sun, it’s really hot today with glorious sunshine, so we decide to go inside for lunch at the pizza stall midships, which is excellent.

Afternoon walking goes smoothly, mostly just us with Barbara Cook to entertain us, getting hot and humid. We needed to cool down after, so go to an excellent classic concern in Lincoln Centre Stage, a double-height showroom midships. The quartet was down to three but they still played an excellent program from Beethoven to Ysaÿe through Joplin and Saint-Saëns.

It’s Gala night tonight so we dress a little early, enjoy our canapés al fresco, and then head to the theatre firstly for Captain’s welcome, followed by the quartet of semi-classic singers knows on HAL as Cantaré.

Excellent Sel de Mer tonight.

Pâté foie gras de canard, escargot & calamari

Maine Lobster and Dover Sole

Tarte Tatin and Crêpes Suzette
