The last time we visited Middlethorpe Hall was eighteen years ago. A sexy new Jasper blue Mercedes CLK hot out of Stuttgart and our dear friends Sheila and John made it memorable in many ways, but not particularly the food.

Today we return for birthday reasons and really enjoy the experience.
Covid security is reassuringly some of the best we’ve seen anywhere recently. It sets the barre for the rest of lunch.
Whist the lounge is impressive it’s quite chilly, but house champagne takes our mind off that, and soon we’re escorted through to the delightfully panelled dining room.
Marmite butter complimented the brioche perfectly.
Starters are pork belly with black pudding and cured salmon with horseradish and beetroot. Both very tasty and impeccably prepared.
Sunday roast beef is sort of obligatory, so we oblige with Sirloin medium rare and proper rare. Both are perfectly cooked for our tastes. Plenty of veggies, all good, noteworthy are creamed leeks gratin and possibly the best roast potatoes in a restaurant setting ever. Yes - ever. The splendid Katnook Estate merlot was one of many excellent wines on a really good list.
Pudding was lovely but maybe not awesome - passion fruit tarte with excellent pastry was perhaps a little bette than the fig parfait but it’s all relative and this is not a grumble.
Excellent service thoughout, we will certainly not leave it so long next time.
